Richard Leveridge
was innate within London on July 19, 1670 and died there on March 22, 1758.
He was an English bass singer of the London stage and composer of baroque music, including many popular songs.
Inside 1695 he became the leading bass singer in the company by using which Henry Purcell worked, playing roles like a magician Ismeron in The Indian Queen, where he sang a major aria "Ye twice ten hundred deities". Fallowing Purcell's demise he continued to operate for composers Daniel Purcell and Jeremiah Clarke. Leveridge besides began to compose himself, & around February 1699 all three provided music for The Island Princess, in which Leveridge's performance was widely acclaimed.
Both books of his songs were published around 1697 and 1699, and his popular theatre songs likewise appeared when only sheet music. When the spell around Dublin he returned to London in 1702 for a revival of The Isl& Princess and the recently production of Macbeth billed as "with music Vocal and Instrumental, all new Composed by Mr Leveridge". He sang a role of Hecate in this work for about Fifty years, & the music remained popular for to a higher degree a century when his demise.
Leveridge became included in the recently trend for operas in the Italian style from either 1705. He so began the short association by having Handel in 1713 to 1714, and acted in the number 1 performances of Il pastor fido and Teseo and played Argantes in a revival of Rinaldo. Late around his career, around 1731, he played the role of Polypheme in the first public performance of Acis and Galatea, and many of Handel's Italian arias were published with English translations by Leveridge.
Around 1714 he moved to work at a fresh theatre at Lincoln's Inn Fields, managed by entrepreneur John Rich. Remaining there for virtually all of his career, he returned to his English repertoire & a recently form, the musical afterpiece. These lightweight works were typically laughable, & around 1716 Leveridge produced his own afterpiece, Pyramus and Thisbe. For this mirthful parody of Italian opera, he wrote a music, adapting a words from either Shakespeare's ''A Midsummer Night's Dream'', and sang the role of Pyramus.
From either a 1720s he was the leading bass at Lincoln's Inn Fields and so at Covent Garden. His repertory exploited his business firm & mighty voice, and his tunes typically became popular favourites. He composed complete 150 songs, & is better known for the loyal ballad "The Roast Beef of Old England".
Inside between engagements Leveridge ran the cafe inside Tavistock Street near Covent Garden, but enjoyed expert health & reduced his performances single inside the go couple seasons prior to retiring in 1751.
